Keep Your Invisalign Braces Crystal Clear With These Cleaning Tips

Your Invisalign braces will ensure that your smile develops as straight as possible but if you’d like to find out How to clean Invisalign braces, keep reading.

Invisalign braces offer so many people the opportunity to straighten their teeth without the dreaded metal appearance of traditional full braces but looking after them is vital to maintain that appearance.

How to Clean Invisalign Braces

Keep your Invisalign braces clear by practising good dental hygiene every single day.

The biggest benefits of wearing Invisalign aligners are that they are transparent and that they can be removed when eating and drinking. Being able to remove your Invisalign braces while eating means no embarrassing food getting caught up in your mouth and of course, the aesthetics of not being able to see them so you can smile with more confidence. Wearing Invisalign means fewer food restrictions as compared with traditional braces as you can generally eat whatever you like.

Here are our tips for keeping your Invisalign braces looking like new.

Remove Your Aligners Before Eating And Drinking

To keep their appearance transparent you should remove your Invisalign braces before you eat and drink. If you still smoke you should consider quitting or removing your Invisalign braces before smoking so as not to discolour them. Do not chew gum while wearing your aligners as it can stick to them.

Rinse Them After Use

One of the most important rules of Invisalign care is that you rinse your aligners each time you remove them from your mouth. They can harbour lots of bacteria, which start to smell bad if you do not clean them properly.

Remember never to rinse your Invisalign braces in warm or hot water as extreme temperature fluctuations can damage the aligners or re-shape the thermoplastic they are comprised of.

Clean Your Invisalign Braces Well

The general rule is that you should clean your aligners every time you clean your teeth, which should be after every meal. Keep a different toothbrush for your Invisalign braces (a soft bristled brush is best) and use firm but gentle movements to clean the surface of the aligners. Make sure you clean the inside and outside thoroughly, before rinsing them again.

Soak your aligners in Invisalign crystals or denture cleaner to make sure you remove any stubborn debris. If you see a sticky white coating on the surface it is probably calcium build-up and it can be removed by soaking your aligners. Speak to your dentist about how to clean Invisalign if you have any questions.

Remember that wearing Invisalign braces forces bacteria between your teeth and your braces so both need to be kept very clean. If you do not keep your Invisalign clean you actually create a breeding ground for bacteria to develop in, making you more susceptible to decay and dental cavities.

Do Not Use Detergents

Never use toothpaste on your Invisalign braces as this can scuff and damage the surface. It can also make the surface shiny, which makes your Invisalign braces more visible in your mouth.

Do not rinse or soak your aligners in mouthwash. Mouthwashes contain different chemicals and colourants, and this could cause damage to the surface or affect the plastic.

Regular visits to your dentist will monitor your hygiene habits and ensure you keep your mouth as clean as possible for your Invisalign braces. Do not skip an appointment!

Wearing Invisalign braces is something to be proud of and keeping your aligners in great shape will benefit your self confidence and your dental hygiene.
